Academic Competitions

Every year students from Years 6-12 with proficiency in Mathematics, Science and English are given the opportunity to be involved in various Academic Competitions. Mackay Christian College has experienced great success at these competitions over the years including being awarded overall competition winners, and placing in various year levels.

Cattle Show Team

Agriculture students have the opportunity to join the Mackay Christian College Agricultural Centre of Excellence Cattle Show Team. Membership is open to all Year 10,11 & 12 students. No prior experience is required as students from all backgrounds can join the Cattle Show Team (CST). The CST trains, prepares and exhibits our own stud cattle and steers as well as cattle from local cattle studs.

Chess Clubs

The Junior School Chess Club and Middle & Senior School Chess Club are groups of students who meet together during lunch time on a particular day of the week. Sometimes chess can be the highlight of a student’s school life. During Chess Club students develop their chess skills and friendships. This group participates in the Queensland Interschool Chess Championship.

Choirs

The College has various choirs depending on the year. Some examples are the Year 3 Choir, Year 4/5 Choir, Year 6/7 Choir and our Song and Dance Club. Our choirs practice during lunchtime and have a number of performance opportunities throughout the year including the Mackay Eisteddfod, College Open Day, Award nights and other community events.

Drama Club

Students in Year 11 & 12 at Mackay Christian College are able to participate in the Drama Club. This club will be offered on a Thursday afternoon from 3:30pm until 5pm. During this time students can work on Eisteddfod performances, Theatre Sport events and gain insight into dramatic skills.

F1 in Schools

Teams of students from all over Australia come together to compete in the F1 in Schools Technology challenge. Students design and build small but very fast versions of Formula 1 racing cars which hurtle down a 20m track at speeds of up to 80kmh. Teams compete in a variety of areas including racing the cars, oral presentations, marketing their product, gaining sponsorships and assembling their team display.

Robotics Club

Students can participate in our Robotics program. The students meet at lunchtimes as well as after school to learn skills in building and programing robots using the Lego RCX or NXT programmable bricks.  Students use these skills to complete design challenges and participate in competitions at a local, regional or state level.
